The 16th annual Ivakkak dog team race begins this month
Kuujjuaq, QC, March 9, 2017 – Makivik Corporation is pleased to announce the 2017 annual Nunavik Ivakkak qimutsiq (dog team) race is preparing to begin. This is the 16th annual Ivakkak race. The route this year includes the communities of Umiujaq, Inukjuak, Puvirnituq, Akulivik and finishing in Ivujivik.
“We are working to ensure that all preparations are made in time for the qimutsiit (dog teams) to start of March 27, 2017 in Umiujaq where the race will commence,” says Andy Moorhouse, Vice President of Makivik Corporation.
“We are proud to continue to take the lead in the race as it is in line with one of our corporate objectives, which is to enhance the Inuit culture. We continue to see the youth and the elders active in this lifestyle and we believe we are reaching our ultimate goal, to ensure the return of the qimmituinnaq, the Inuit sled dog, which was vital to Inuit survival across the North. We wish all participants a safe and successful participation to this year’s race. I would like to thank our sponsors, without your support this race would not be possible.”
There will be thirteen dog teams each consisting of a lead musher and a partner. A mandatory veterinarian, a lead coordinator and support crew will assist the racers throughout the trail.
During the race updates will be provided on our website, www.ivakkak.com/ and on Facebook (search: Ivakkak 2017).
