Kuujjuaq, Nunavik – February 20, 2024 – The organizers of the Ivakkak Dog Sled Race have announced a change to the route for Ivakkak 2024. Following an evaluation of the trails south of Umiujaq and careful consideration of safety concerns, it has been determined that the mild winter conditions experienced this year render the original route unsafe for travel. Consequently, the race route has been altered, and teams will now be traveling north from Umiujaq to Puvirnituq with a stop in Inukjuak along the route, the start date remains February 26th.
“We understand the importance of prioritizing the safety of our participants and support staff,” said Andy Moorhouse, Vice-President Economic Development at Makivvik. “After thorough assessment and consultation with the mushers and our crew, we have made the decision to adjust the route to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.”
As a result of the route change, some support staff positions have become available. Individuals from the communities along the new route are encouraged to apply for these positions by contacting Lynn Moorhouse at lmoorhouse@makivvik.ca.
“We recognize the importance of community involvement in making Ivakkak a success,” Moorhouse added. “By engaging individuals from the communities we visit, we aim to foster a sense of unity and collaboration throughout the event.”
Interested supporters and spectators are encouraged to stay updated on further developments and announcements through the official Ivakkak website at http://www.ivakkak.com.
