The day started out quite stormy when the racers woke up yesterday morning in Tasijuakuluk (Robert’s Lake) and it cleared up in time for the 9 AM departure for Kangirsuk, the first community on their itinerary. 4 to 5 centimeters of fresh powder had covered the trails, making it a little soft for the dogs to travel on. As the morning progressed the skies had cleared up and the temperature reached a high of -10 Celsius. In view of the fact that it was such a beautiful day, some of the mushers arrived with no coats or hats on. It took no more than 4 hours and 50 minutes for all 16 teams to make it to the checkpoint located in a valley in the middle of the village. At the time of each arrival, the Inuit of Kangirsuk gathered at the basin amongst the hills of the small town to welcome the dog teams with cheerful shouts. Children clustered themselves around each and every dog team with admiration and curiousity.
A community feast was organized by the local Northern Village as a welcoming gesture for everyone to enjoy and many prizes were given away to lucky winners. They will perhaps once again face bad weather tomorrow as it was announced that there will be 40 to 60 kms winds coming from the north west. If all goes well and the weather conditions permit, the teams are scheduled to depart at 10 AM, heading towards Aupaluk.
Number 15 Peter Kiatainaq of Kangiqsujuaq and his son Peter Jr made it passed the checkpoint line at 12:45 PM and the last to arrive was number 17 Johnny Aakutaaq Angatuk of Tasiujaq who is also partnered with his son Sammy who arrived at 2:03 PM.
