The racers get their sleds ready with supplies and equipment

Ivakkak course de traineau à chien edition 2010 arrivée à Kangirsuk Jeudi le 25 MarsIt was a busy day today for the Ivakkak 2009 racers. It started out with a morning group meeting, during which the race officials took time to explain the race’s rules and logistics, and study the race itinerary with the racers. The mushers and their partners, as well as the race officials and snowmobile safety patrol, then went over to the Inukjuak Co-op to stock up on supplies. During that time, dog food sponsored by the Federation of Cooperatives of Northern Quebec (FCNQ) was also handed out, to be packed on the dog sleds for the trail ahead. Some essential equipment, such as first aid kits and flares, was also handed out today. Each team was also provided with a SPOT tracking device, which will enable the race officials to follow their progression on the trail at all times. Through a link on the Ivakkak 2009′s official website’s homepage, the general public will also be able to follow the dog teams’ progression online, as soon as the race starts. A draw also took place amongst the racers, to determine their bib numbers (see below) and the order in which they will start. The start is scheduled for tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM, but that is if Mother Nature cooperates, as there are presently blizzard and strong wind warnings in effect for the northernmost communities of Quebec, which could very well delay the start of the race. Only time will tell…

Note that although there are 13 teams taking part in Ivakkak 2009, the racers’ numbers go up to 14, as there is no number 13, as some considers it an unlucky number. Let’s just hope that the fact that there are 13 dog teams registered in this year’s race will bring them good luck! Especially in regards to the weather, as opposed to Ivakkak 2007′s constant stormy conditions…
