The dog teams reunite and get back on track but are stopped by the weather once again

Ivakkak course de traîneau à chien edition 2010 Aupaluk to TasiujaqAfter the first day’s unfortunate turn of events, the 11 dog teams that stayed behind in Iqaluppilik got going again yesterday morning and covered the 22 kilometers separating them from the rest of the group. With the wind at their back and the sun shining, it wasn’t long before they were all reunited at the first checkpoint in Pingurjuarusiq. Following a much-needed meeting with the race officials to set things straight, the guys and girl were all ready to hit the road again at 1PM, eager to make it to the second checkpoint. This time, the dog teams covered another 40 kilometers or so, making their way to a place known as Tasirjuakuluk (Robert’s Lake). As the afternoon rolled in, the wind died down and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky to be seen. At -15, the racers couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather conditions to travel. It was a smooth sail. By 3 PM, the first dog team were starting to show up, and by 4:30 PM, all 16 dog teams had made it to this second checkpoint. Some settled in the cabin located there, while others pitched their tents for the night.

Although the dog teams were eager to continue their journey towards Kangirsuk when they got up this morning, Mother Nature had other plans for them. The wind had grown stronger, and with the snow falling, it quickly turned into a blizzard. The race officials decided that it was safer to wait out the storm, rather than risking to lose some teams out on the land once again.

If the weather has improved by tomorrow morning, the dog teams should get going again and are expected to arrive in Kangirsuk, the next community on their itinerary, around noon. But only tomorrow will tell…

Stay tuned for more news to come tomorrow…
