The dog teams ready for the last portion of the race

The dog teams that were camped out in tents last night finally had the chance to meet up with the rest of the group this afternoon, as the weather cleared up. Most of the dogs are now settled on the ice of Deception Bay, near the mine dock. As for the few others who stayed at the Avaala cabins, about 5 kilometres from the dock, they will meet up with them early tomorrow morning, before everybody hits the road again. The dog teams should therefore be on their way first thing tomorrow morning, on their way to Salluit, which will most likely be their final destination. Before they head out, the Ivakkak 2007 participants who have been kindly welcomed at the Raglan mine camp in Deception Bay, where they waited out the latest storm, would like to thank all the staff there for sharing their quarters with them over the past couple of days. Special thanks go to the camp’s manager, Clément Binette, who has been trying to accommodate them as best he could with the little means he had, as the road from the mine’s main complex was also closed due to bad weather. The Ivakkak 2007 participants would also like to extend their appreciation to the kitchen staff, who have been cooking great meals for the group, as well as to the site’s nurse, who has been taking care of some of the guys aches and pains during their stay. Also so thank are the people of Salluit who have graciously opened up their cabins for the Ivakkak 2007 participants to stay in while at Pangaliriaq and Avaala, on the way to the Deception Bay mine camp. Nakurmiimarialuk!

Note: Due to the problems encountered on the trail this past Sunday and due to the storm, which lasted until this morning, the race officials have decided not to take the times for those days into account. The timer will start again tomorrow morning, when the dog teams get going. But in the meantime, the standings remain the same as when the dog teams left Tasialurjuaq Sunday morning, as of March 18 (see below).
