Day 3 Race Results


Day 3 seems to be the crucial day for some of the racers as Ivakkak continues from Tasiujaq to Aupaluk. Junior May remains in first place and Charlie Watt Jr. in second.

Two racers doubted they would remain in the race as this third day brought on challenges. Massiu Nassaq’s sled received damage and he mushed directly to Aupaluk to repair his sled, and Adamie Inukpuk of Inukjuaq nearly removed himself from the race for now while George Annanack of Kuujjuaq and Harry Okpik of Quartaq left Tasiujaq only today. They decided to keep their dogs one more night in Tasiujaq to give their paws time to rest. They are now placed in eighth and ninth positions respectively. Simionie moves ahead to a greatly improved 7th position from last place position the day before.

Junior May and Charlie W arrived with a mere 4 minute difference between them as Tamusie moved himself back to third place coming in just 18 minutes behind. Bobby moves again to 4rth arriving 27 minutes after Tamusie.

The return of the Inuit Dogs

At the end of the last century, the pure-breed Husky dog was nearly extinct in Nunavik. Nowadays, Inuit people mostly travel by snowmobile. Yet, the memories of another time when dogs were man’s most reliable partners are not so far behind. Long known to be man’s best friend, dogs were once essential to the survival of Inuit in the merciless arctic environment. In fact, only a few decades ago, sled dogs were a foundation of the Inuit nomadic way of life.

These brave allies were central to seasonal Inuit movements, especially in the winter.Strongly built with a thick fur, huskies can withstand bitterly cold temperatures and are capable of lugging their share of supplies during long hours travelling across the endless tundra. Harnessed to a sled or simply keeping pace alongside their master, dogs made it possible for Inuit to cover great distances in their search for game to provide for their families, and to transport heavy loads (...).
