All the Inuit dog teams registered in Ivakkak 2009 are now in Inukjuak, a community located on the eastern coast of the Hudson Bay, in Nunavik, the northernmost region of Quebec. The start of the 8th edition of this great race is scheduled for Tuesday morning, on March 24. Except for the 2 local dog teams already in Inukjuak, all other 11 participating dog teams coming from 5 other communities in Nunavik (Kuujjuaq, Tasiujaq, Quaqtaq, Kangiqsujuaq and Puvirnituq) were flown in by HS-748, courtesy of the region”s airline, Air Inuit, which transported the mushers, their dogs, sleds and camping equipment to Inukjuak this past Friday and Saturday. All together, a total of over 150 pure-breed Inuit huskies are now settled on the plateau overlooking this beautiful community, howling to one another, anxious to get going on this great journey. Meanwhile, their masters (also called mushers) and racing partners, as well as the race officials and snowmobile safety patrol, are gonna be busy for the next couple of days, getting ready for the big day.
